A list is a group of contacts you add by hand, by import or through a signup form. Send a campaign to a list and everyone subscribed to it is in the audience.
Before you start: go to Contacts > Lists. You need at least one contact to put in a list — see Add and edit contacts or Import contacts.

List or segment

Both group contacts, but they answer different questions. A list is something a person belongs to and can leave. A segment is a query over the data you hold. Use a list for an audience people opted into, and a segment to slice your contacts by the data on them.

Create a list

1

Open the Lists page

Go to Contacts > Lists and select Create List.
2

Name it

Enter a List Name and, if it helps your team, a Description.
3

Choose the preferred channels

Preferred Channels records which channels the list is meant for, such as email only, or email and SMS. It documents the list’s purpose for your team and is shown on the list’s page. It doesn’t stop a campaign from using the list on another channel — who a campaign actually reaches is decided by each contact’s channel identities.
4

Save

Select Create. The list appears in the table with a Subscribers count of zero.

Add contacts to a list

  • From the contacts table. Tick the contacts you want, then select Add to List and pick the list. Contacts already subscribed are left as they are.
  • On a single contact. Open the contact and use the Lists section. See Add and edit contacts.
  • On import. Choose a list while importing a CSV. See Import contacts.
  • Through a form. A signup form always feeds exactly one list. See Forms.

What Subscribers counts

A list’s Subscribers figure counts the contacts subscribed to it right now. Two groups are not counted:
  • Contacts who unsubscribed from the list.
  • People who signed up through a double opt-in form but haven’t confirmed yet.
So a form can have more submissions than its list has subscribers. That gap is the unconfirmed ones.

Remove someone from a list

Removing a contact from a list sets that membership to Unsubscribed. The contact itself, and their membership of every other list, is untouched.
Unsubscribing from a list is not the same as suppression. A suppressed address is blocked across your whole organization, on every list. See Suppressions and unsubscribes.

Delete a list

Select ⋮ on the list’s row, then Delete. Two rules limit this:
  • A list a signup form has used can’t be deleted. Delete or repoint the form first.
  • A signup form can only be published while the list it feeds is Active.
Deleting a list removes the memberships, not the contacts.

Segments

Group contacts by rules instead of by subscription.

Import contacts

Bring an audience in from a CSV and put it straight into a list.

Forms

Let people subscribe themselves to a list.

Create a campaign

Send to a list, a segment, or both.
