# Let contacts manage their preferences

> Set up your organization's preference center, link to it with the update_profile_url merge tag, and choose what contacts can change.

The preference center is a page where a contact updates their own details and chooses what they
hear from you, without unsubscribing from everything. Your organization has one, shared by every
campaign.

## What contacts can do there

* Edit their first name, last name, phone number and any custom fields you allow
* Join or leave the lists you offer
* Pick or drop the tags you offer, such as topics they care about
* Unsubscribe from everything, after a confirmation screen

Their email address is shown partly hidden and can't be changed there. The page uses your
organization's logo, colors and language, and works without scripting in the visitor's browser.

## Set it up

In the dashboard, open the preference center settings and choose:

| Setting | What it controls |
| - | - |
| Lists | The lists a contact can join or leave |
| Tags | The tags a contact can pick or drop |
| Editable fields | First name, last name, phone, and any of your custom fields |
| Heading and body | The text above the form |
| Success message | What a contact sees after saving |
| Unsubscribe heading and body | The text on the unsubscribe confirmation screen |
| Goodbye email | An optional email sent after a contact unsubscribes from everything, with your own subject and body |
| Design and language | The same theme and languages as your forms |

## Link to it from a campaign

Put `{{update_profile_url}}` in an email, usually in the footer next to the unsubscribe link:

```html theme={"system"}
<a href="{{update_profile_url}}">Update your preferences</a>
```

Each recipient gets their own link to `https://forms.brudcast.com/p/…`. It identifies the contact,
so they don't sign in, and it works for 30 days after the email is sent. After that the page says
the link has expired, and the next email carries a fresh one.

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Don't forward a preference link.** Anyone with the link can change that contact's details for
> as long as it works.

The link doesn't replace `{{unsubscribe_url}}`. Keep an unsubscribe link in every marketing email.
